A new edition of his poetry was printed to cope with the demand#Along with many other young British intellectuals, including George Orwell, Auden went to take part in the Spanish civil war in 1936. He intended to be an ambulance driver, but ended up working in propaganda#Auden believed passionately that poetry is a serious business: "Even a limerick ought to be something a man of honor awaiting death from cancer or a firing squad could read without contempt."
